WORKDAY THIS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8th

8:30 - 11:30

Come and join your fellow members of SCG for the first fall garden Workday, September 8. It is not too early to start working on those fall season service hours. This is a good way to build community and meet the new members.

The coordinators for this day will be Mary Gifford, Diana Dworaczyk and Emily Tisinger. For your safety, please wear appropriate clothing and shoes while you are working. We will meet at 8:30 a.m. outside the office trailer for sign in and a short briefing regarding tasks to be done.

Please Note: Since the temperature will still probably be hot, we will start at 8:30.
We are looking forward to seeing you in the garden.

COMMUNITY COMPOST

A gentle reminder: compost is a very limited resource at Sunshine Community Garden. Please put no more than 2-4 inches of compost from the compost piles in your plot per season. This is a community resource, and everyone should have the opportunity to use it, not first-come, first-served. If you want additional compost, please dig out the leaf beds or purchase it from the Natural Gardener, Geo Growers, or another provider of organic compost.

ADOPT A BED IN MICAH 6

We need volunteers to Adopt a Bed in Micah 6 for the fall plantings.

Each bed is approximately 25 sq feet. Each volunteer is asked to plant and maintain the bed for the season. Volunteers can pick from a list of vegetables that we need to grow. The produce grown in the Micah 6 Garden is donated each week to the Micah 6 Food Pantry to help meet the needs of the homeless and impoverished in central Austin.

Contact Linda Francescone, lfrances16@hotmail.com, to volunteer or find out more information. Remember hours spent maintaining your adopted Micah 6 bed can be counted as service hours.

YOUR SUMMER 2012 TOMATO CROP - THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE TASTY

It's time, maybe past time, to take stock of your tomato crop this year and note which tomato varieties did well and which ones struggled and collapsed in the Austin heat. Which tomatoes do you plan to grow next year, and which ones will go on your never-again list? Are there some varieties that you heard good things about and would try out next year if only we could have them at the next plant sale? We need to know so we can plan for the plant sale next spring.

Email your comments and recommendations to Randy Thompson, jartdaht@gmail.com.
