I am a retired attorney having served 33 years as general counsel of a statewide professional association for registered nurses. I have been gardening at Sunshine for approximately 30 years. I served as a director around 2010 and twice as vice president (2015-17; 2019-present). If elected, I will work to promote the "community" qualities of Sunshine and its purposes as a charitable, educational organization. One of my specific goals will be to complete the current review of whether Sunshine could do more to maximize success for new gardeners and if so, begin taking the steps to accomplish.
Greetings fellow Sunshine Community Gardeners! My name is Steve Camp. My wife Cathy and I have been part of the SGC community for 2+ years after relocating to Austin from Corpus Christi to be close to our daughters and their families. I was the middle child of 5 (2 older brothers, 2 younger sisters) and grew up in the military, the son of a USAF colonel. I spent the better part of 40 years as an operating engineer for several crane and rigging companies in South Texas.
Since retirement and moving to Austin I have come to admire and respect what SCG accomplishes for the community through volunteerism and hard work.
I'm currently the manager of the electric garden tools and operate the tractor for various garden projects.
My name is Debra Mariano - I garden plot G5-4. Gardening at Sunshine has been a wonderful experience for me in so many ways. I always leave the garden feeling recharged. My interest in gardening grew from watching my mom garden among the tall pine trees at our Houston home. Before retiring to Austin in 2017, I was a home gardener-first in TX, then MD and finally, NM. All those years of solo gardening in my yard-I did not appreciate what I was missing out on until I started gardening at Sunshine in the Spring of 2018. I feel so lucky to be a member of such an interesting and welcoming community. I am happy to serve this community in any way that I can, and I would feel honored to serve as Treasurer.
