Purple Pea Pods and Blossoms on January 1, 2022. By Maria Beach
New Year's Day was absolutely gorgeous at Sunshine, with blue skies, highs in the 70s, and bees and butterflies gathering pollen. But then our first hard freeze of the winter season blew through, wiping out the remaining warm season crops and inflicting heavy damage on cool season crops--even many of those that were covered. While it was sad to see so many lovely vegetables succumb to the freeze, the new year will bring new opportunities for growing food and community at our garden. This issue of the Weeder looks back at gardeners' 2021 generosity with an end of the year report for the Micah 6 garden and forward towards new things to plant and upcoming events.

Micah 6 End of Year Report
by Walter Kuhl
December Totals:
- Produce: 361 Pounds
- Dry Goods: 72.5 Pounds
Grand Totals for 2021:
Below is a photo of a cauliflower donated by an unknown Sunshine gardener. Thank you so much for this beautiful and delicious donation, and thank you to all Sunshine gardeners who have shared their bounty with the Micah 6 Food Pantry this past year. Your high quality donations have helped numerous families and individuals who are struggling in our expensive local economy.
Special thanks to Mary Gifford and Marsha Riti for making the delivery possible this past week. Just as I was loading 80 pounds of produce to deliver to Micah 6, I found out that their panty was closed due to covid cases among their staff. At Mary's suggestion, Marsha contacted Hope Food Pantry at Trinity Church of Austin, who was happy to accept our produce. Such a relief!
Final comment -- from the records I've seen, this year a record amount of produce has been donated by Sunshine gardeners to the Micah 6 Food Pantry. Cheers to all Sunshine gardeners! May the New Year bring everyone Health and Happiness!
