Credit Card Cashiers Needed
Job Description - Processing customer credit cards at check-out.
This volunteer opportunity requires volunteers to have a cell phone or tablet that they will use to swipe credit cards and process sales. Volunteers are also required to download the free Square app on their cell phone or tablet.Volunteers are needed to cover shifts for Friday, Saturday and Sunday (March 3rd - March 5th). There are a limited number of postcards and posters available that advertise our spring plant sale. If you have favorite stores or shops or businesses where you know you can post a notice, please pick one up in the trailer at Sunshine.

It's time to start collecting boxes for the plant sale. Ideally, members will collect those boxes that retailers use for display. Excellent choices are those from canned pet food and flats used to hold beer or berries. Not as excellent choices are big boxes. When you do collect those boxes, please place them in the trailer on and around the white tables. This will be ongoing until the plant sale on March 4.
Mushroom Compost - It's Here!
This will be available to SCG gardeners at a cost of $1.00 per bucket. To ensure that all gardeners can participate, there is a limit of 20 buckets for the first week. The money box is located in the hoop house.
The compost comes from Monterrey Mushrooms in Madisonville. Information about mushroom compost.
The following is how Monterrey Mushrooms makes the compost (cut & paste from website):
- Phase I. Straw bedding from horse farms, or baled straw,
protein meal, gypsum and water are mixed together and kept
outdoors to be biochemically converted into the preliminary
food source for the mushroom by the tremendous heat naturally
evolved.
- Phase II. The compost produced in "Phase I" is mixed with vegetable oil and more water, then filled into wooden trays before "Phase II" starts. Once into the "Phase II" room, the compost is pasteurized to free it of weed molds and insects, then cooled down to room temperature so that the mushroom spawn can be added. A mixture of peat moss, limestone, and water is applied to the top of the tray.
What to do in your garden in February - Spring is coming!
Sow Seeds
Vegetables: Beets, Carrots, Endive, Kale, Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Mustard Greens, Parsnip, Peas, Radish, Rutabaga, Spinach, Turnips. Start Tomatoes and Peppers indoors.
Herbs: Chives, Cilantro, Dill, Echinacea, Parsley.
Flowers: Coreopsis, Cosmos, Nasturtium, Sweet Peas.
Plant
Vegetables: Artichokes, Asparagus, Asian Greens, Broccoli, Cabbage, Chard, Collards, Lettuce, Mustard Greens, Onion Sets, Seed Potatoes, Shallot Bulbs, Spinach.
Fruit: Blackberries, Dewberries, Grapes, Figs, Pears, Persimmon, Pomegranate, Strawberries.
Herbs: Calendula, Chives, Cilantro, Dill, Echinacea, Fennel, Feverfew, Lavender, Pansies, Parsley, Oregano, Rosemary, Sage, Savory, Sorrel, Thyme.
Annuals: African Daisy, Alyssum, Balloon Flower, Delphinium, Dianthus, Dusty Miller, English Daisy, Larkspur, Lobelia, Nemesia, Petunias, Poppies, Snapdragons, Stock.
Perennials: Black Foot Daisy, Four Nerve Daisy, Hymenoxys, Ruellia, Salvia greggii, Skeleton Leaf Golden Eye, Turk's Cap, Yarrow, Zexmenia.
Feed and Cultivate
Early in the month, work in compost and organic fertilizer to vegetable and flower beds so you'll be ready when the planting fever hits. Add Cotton Seed Meal, and a mineral source. Inoculate your soil with a dose of Compost Tea.
Prepare garden beds for spring crops by working in 1"-2" Compost, and Cottonseed Meal at the rate of 1 lb. per 30 square feet.
For best results, mix the compost in to about 6" deep, then add the Cottonseed Meal to just the top two inches of soil.
Prune, Spray, Maintain
If you haven't done it yet, apply Corn Gluten natural pre-emergent weed control.
For plants that need supplemental water: always water deeply, especially before freezes. Dry plants are more likely to suffer freeze damage than well-watered ones. Be careful not to over-water; plants use water more slowly when temperatures are cool.
Continue to protect tender plants, especially new seedlings, before a freeze.
Valentine's Day means it's time to prune roses. Sometime during the middle of February, shape your rose and give it some TLC in the form of compost and organic fertilizer.
Shear and shape hardy herbs as needed. Oregano, Rosemary, Savory, and Thyme will especially benefit from a late-winter haircut.
