Tribute to Jesse Lee South

1938-2021

Sunshine Community Garden mourns the loss of our good friend and former gardener, Jesse South. For many years he served Sunshine in a variety of board positions. He always brought a smile and honest good will to his volunteer work.

Most notably, in the 2004-2005 timeframe, Jesse played an essential role on the team who negotiated Sunshine's separation from the Sustainable Food Center which allowed us to regain control of our own finances. This was a difficult period of internal turmoil, as we hammered out the future of Sunshine, and Jesse was credited by all involved for his quiet competence and wise counsel throughout. He helped to establish some of the fiscal and management practices that have allowed Sunshine to thrive as a project of the Central Texas Community Gardens Initiative (CTCGI) which is the formal name of our 501(c)(3) non-profit. Since then, we have become the largest completely self-funded, all volunteer and philanthropic community garden in Texas in no small part because of volunteers like Jesse.

Even after Jesse and his wife Sidney left Sunshine, they would return to help with our annual plant sale and various major projects such as installing a new covering for the Hoop House. Though unable to continue their volunteer work for SCG in recent years, they have remained in our hearts as honorary members of Sunshine long after "giving up their plot" as we say of members whose life circumstances require that they move on. Jesse will be missed by all who knew him and worked with him. Sunshine extends our sympathy to his family.

We will be making a donation in his name to the Micah 6 Food Pantry during Amplify Austin. Amplify Austin provides 100% match for all donations made March 4-5, 2021 and we think that Jesse would be especially delighted that we are donating wisely - and taking advantage of these matching funds in his honor!
