Successful Plant Sale Breaks Records!
The weather was good, the plants were healthy, and the music provided just the right atmosphere. Everyone had a good time at the plant sale... oh, and we also set a new sales record (over $50,000). We won t know yet how much net profit was made until all the bills are in, but it is looking good.
Enormous kudos to Randy Thompson and Janet Adams who worked night and day for months to make this happen, and to all the other volunteers who helped make the Spring Plant Sale one of the best events of the year. In addition, day-of special thanks are owed to those who helped process transactions: Jen Woertz stepped in to help, Nick Sweeney problem solved, and Carol Limaye processed all the funds.
Two points:
- Since we sold most of the plants, there are very few left and they will not be discounted this year. There is no benefit from waiting to purchase additional plants.
- If you have any out-of-pocket costs needing reimbursement, please submit a statement (with receipts if possible) to the Treasurer immediately. We want to have all our costs known as soon as possible so we know how much to donate to TSBVI and All Blind Children of Texas.

Urban Sketchers at Sunshine's Plant Sale
Sunshine Community Garden had the honor of a visit from the Urban Sketchers of Austin on the Saturday of our plant sale. Urban Sketchers Austin is a local community that meets to sketch and share and promote the Urban Sketchers mission and manifesto, which is:
- We draw on location, indoors or out, capturing what we see from direct observation.
- Our drawings tell the story of our surroundings, the places we live and where we travel.
- Our drawings are a record of time and place.
- We are truthful to the scenes we witness.
- We use any kind of media and cherish our individual styles.
- We support each other and draw together.
- We share our drawings online.
- We show the world, one drawing at a time.
If you didn't get a chance to see the Sketchers' beautiful renditions of our gardens and sale activities, you can see their works here. --Suzanne Bradford
Coconut Fiber for Sale
Venkappa Gani and his wife, Ratna, sell coconut fiber every year at our plant sale. If you missed out on getting your fiber this year, you can visit their website at http://www.ganigarden.com/ to find out the benefits of using coconut fiber in your garden or potted plants.
As many of you know, peat moss is being over-harvested in many parts of the world, wreaking havok on many ecosystems. But coconut fiber is a great alternative to peat. It is good at keeping moisture in the soil, which is particularly important during our hot summer months!
Venkappa and his wife have very interesting life stories. You can read more about them in this February 2017 article from Edible Austin magazine. --Suzanne Bradford
