No Khaki Weed in Compost Pile - Put in Dumpster
You will see signs about khaki weed at Sunshine. Here is some information needed to identify, avoid and deal with it. Look at the photo of a mat of khaki weed. You will find this all over Sunshine on the roads, walkways, parking areas.
Please notice the burrs on the photo to the right. As the year goes on, these start to dry out and become very hard. They will puncture the tire of a bicycle. Your dogs will find these very painful on their paws. They will hurt as you try to remove them from your shoes and gloves as well. Many people confuse them but purslane has no burrs and is edible.
If you find khaki weed and are removing it from your area at the garden, Do Not put it in the compost. Put it in the dumpster. It spreads well enough without adding it to our compost. If you find it growing inside your plot, dig it up immediately. It has deep roots and is very difficult to completely remove once established. If you have questions or need help identifying khaki weed, ask around. Someone near you at the garden will be able to help.

Need Gardneing Equipment?
The following offer was sent on July 6, 2018 so act quickly to see whether Sarah has anything left. Sarah said, "My landlord has decided to xeriscape the horse herb lawn by the parking lot of 3903 Peterson. Since I have a container garden over much of it, it must go. As in Now. If you know anyone who need galvanized pots, other pots, garden paraphernalia, a spherical composter, various fruit plants and other greenery, and any toads they want (I do not.think they will appreciate xeriscaping) call and let me know so I can be there to help at the break of dawn before the Sun comes to slog us with sweat." Call Sarah at 512-660-2386.
Bills to be Sent this Week
The bills for unworked service hours in the Spring season will be sent out over the weekend with a due date of August 1. Unlike past bills, these will be emails from the treasurer with the invoice as an attachment. (The invoices from QuickBooks used in the past tended to get routed to the Junk folder, so we are doing it differently this time).
Only new gardeners will get a bill for seasonal plot fees for Fall since veteran gardeners paid their annual fees in January. If you do not get a bill, it probably means you have completed and recorded your service hours and do not owe anything. Well done!
