Fall Seed Giveaway - Today is Last Day

Jennifer Steverson with the City of Austin, Environmental Program Coordinator, Community Gardens Program, Natural Resources Division reports:

She received a generous donation from the Central Texas Seed Savers for all gardeners, including individual home gardeners. These seeds are already separated into gift bags. I've attached the variety of seeds that will be included in the bags.

Help Needed in the Cool of Sunday Morning

Susan Wallar is looking for 2-3 people to come spread leaves on the shade garden (in front of the office) on Sunday July 26th at 8:30. With 2-3 people it probably can be done in 1-2 hours. There will be leaves dumped close to the garden which will cut down on time going to the compost area. If you can come help for some or all of the time it would be appreciated. West Nile virus found near SCG

Kay Murray reports:

Mosquitoes positive for West Nile virus were found a block or two away from Sunshine. We certainly have them. People should take precautions and wear repellent and dump out any standing water. The mosquitoes carrying it are mostly active from dusk to dawn.

How do you garden in the Dog Days of August?

Answer: "Sunscreen" your mostly empty garden with mulch.

The photo shows pine straw (a/k/a pine needles to us "Yankees"). It prevents weeds, adds nutrition to the soil, and keeps the moisture in the soil. Other mulches such as leaves, hay straw, and wood chips will also help.
