Fall Plant Sale!
Planning for the Fall plant sale has begun. The plan is to start the seeding the 2nd week of August. Most of the seeds should be germinated and ready to transplant about 2 weeks after that. We will have approximately 5000-6000 transplants, including fun varieties of broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cabbages, and more. Since the fall sale gives all profits to TSBVI, your volunteer time counts as your TSBVI hour!
Volunteers will be needed for:
- Planting seeds in plug trays
- Filling pots and transplanting plugs
- Watering transplants
- Moving plants from the TSBVI greenhouse to the Sunshine greenhouse the day before the sale
- Cashiers
- Tag writing
We will need volunteers to water once we start planting. Hopefully, we can get 14 folks (water twice a day, so each person will have one turn a week). Tag writing will be assigned once we know what has survived the transplanting process. Cashiers should expect to fill a 3-hour shift.

Reminder - Wood Chips and Leaves Satellite Station
Gardeners on Sunshine's north end are reminded of the wood chips and leaves satellite station located in the first "drive-in" area west of the parking lot. As plots are cleared of spring crops, covering the plot with leaves is a good way to protect the soil and suppress weeds until plant fall crops. The satellite station has been set up on a trial basis to make Sunshine's supply of wood chips and leaves more convenient for gardeners on Sunshine's north end.
What to do in your garden in August
This month is your last chance to plant certain veggie seeds and plants.
Plant vegetable seeds. Beans, corn, cucumber, garlic, potatoes, shallot, summer squash. EARLY AUGUST: Okra, black-eyed peas, New Zealand and Malabar spinach, winter squash.
Plant these vegetable seeds in pots or flats. Keep these "cool." Give them bright sun, but perhaps some shade from the hottest afternoon sun, or an "awning" made of 30% shade cloth. Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, chard, Chinese cabbage, fennel, kale. LATE AUGUST: Collards, endive, head and leaf lettuce, mustard.
Plant vegetable plants. Okra, New Zealand or Malabar spinach, summer or winter squash.
Plant herb plants. Mexican mint marigold, mints, oregano, rosemary, sage, wormwood (artemesia).
Plant annual flower/ornamental plants. Blue daze, Celosias (cockscomb or plume), Zinnia.
Consider investing in soaker hoses. These put the water right where it's needed - in the soil and next to the plant - rather than wasting the water into the air. Of course, this saves on the water bill, too, and again - reduces the chances of diseases on the plants.
Mulch, mulch, mulch! If you haven't done so already, be sure all bare soil is covered with mulch, or compost with mulch on top. Avoid putting mulch or compost onto plant stems. Use about three inches total wherever possible.
Continue spraying all plants with seaweed regularly. Seaweed, with all its trace elements and hormones, can do more to help plants survive the heat than anything else, besides water and mulch. Spray on and under the leaves, early morning or late evening.
