Gardeners Meeting
An all gardeners meeting is scheduled for October 5th, 2013 at 11 am in the portable. Come meet your fellow gardeners and find out what is going on at Sunshine Gardens.
Hand Tools
There are now hand tools in the Tool Shed on the bench with the Green Binder. Please return them after use.
Urban Farm Code Updates
Austin Urban Farms asks interested gardeners to reach out to the City Council before an important vote on October 17th. The city council is considering a regulation that would limit farms in the urban area. For more information go to this website
Fire Ants
Put fire ant bait around the mound not on top, and do so early morning or evening when the ants are actively foraging.
New Bulletin Board
Sunshine Gardens now has a beautiful bulletin board, made by Robert Jarry, attached to the Tool Shed. Please check the board for postings with garden information.

Waterwise Open House
Saturday, October 5th

Travis County AgriLife Extension Office
1600B Smith Rd., Austin
Come learn water wise practices for your home landscape at the Texas A&M Travis County AgriLife Extension Office Open House. Travis County Master Gardeners are available for one-on-one discussion on installing drip irrigation, composting, vegetable gardening, raising chickens, and identifying good/bad bugs. Free event for the entire family with hands-on kid's activities. Stroll the demonstration garden and ask questions. Great gardening publications available.
Noxious Weeds
Thanks to those of you who are digging Khaki Weed. The weed is busy producing seeds at present so even if you don't have time to dig them up just remove the top part to eliminate some of next year's problems. Throw Khaki Weed in the dumpster.
Winter Transplant Sale at TSBVI
The plants are $1.00 each and the greenhouse will be open for business on:
- Friday, Oct 4, from 1:30-4:00 pm
- Saturday, Oct 5, from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm
There are Broccoli (two varieties), Brussel Sprouts, Cabbages (Red and White), Cauliflower (White, Purple, Yellow), Kale and Pansies.
Plants may be on sale the following week, depending on availability.
Come support the TSBVI horticultural program. Most of the plants were raised by the students.

Mentoring opportunity
We often have new gardeners who are new to gardening. We're looking for seasoned gardeners who wish to share their expertise and gardening wisdom with the newbies or with people on the wait list. Mentoring can take as little or as much time as you want. Mentoring might involve showing them your plot and talking about how you do things to having them help you maintain your plot. If you're interested in being a mentor, please contact Kay McMurry at scg.plots@gmail.com.
Thought for the week
Let me say something about this business of rows. I'm a firm believer in them, in their separate beds, despite the current trend towards clusters and bunches. ...When it comes to vegetables I find geometry appealing. This goes back, I guess, to the argument about what is beauty and whose eyes are beholding it. To trot out another axiom, when my eyes are involved, form follows function. Vegetables are as practical as it comes.
