The end of September was a beautiful day for working at Sunshine.
New Wheelbarrows!
Bob Easter has bought two new blue heavy-duty Jackson and one two-wheel yellow True Temper wheelbarrow for use by the gardeners. Thank you, Bob!
Sunshine will also have to purchase and install new blue and yellow plastic trays for our damaged wheelbarrows. The large cracks you see in the plastic trays are due to damage done by gardeners hauling large rocks. Please don't use the plastic wheelbarrows to haul rocks!
Gardening tip: Steel wheelbarrows are perfect for hauling rocks!
New Sunshine Gardener Highlights Hurricane Damage in Vieques
This report comes from new Sunshine gardeners John Hart and Hallie Speranza!
Two winters ago, we had the delightful experience of visiting the natural Island of Vieques near Puerto Rico where we leaned about Finca Conscienscia, a group of people teaching the islanders to garden organically, save seeds, return to self-sustaining farming, keep bees and even work with Africanized bees. Gardening organically had been lost because of the colonial agriculture and agribusiness.
After our trip, we sent them many seeds and sprouting potatoes.
The recent hurricanes have blown and swept away their efforts much like the Urban Farmers in Houston. In a recent news photo, we could see that a small island hospital--where some of the beds were--was smashed and without a roof.
We would like to help. The reason this effort is so important is that most of the people with the most severe devastation are subsistence living. Isolated. We are collecting money to let Finca buy the seeds they need to recover. If there is no supplier of wholesale seeds, we can purchase and send the seeds that they need. Upcoming Austin Event that Benefits the Green Corn Project
It is the 19th annual Grow Locally Cook Globally Fall Festival, so mark your calendars for October 29 (starting at12:00 pm at Boggy Creek Farm, 3414 Lyons Road, Austin, TX).
This year's event will include more than 20 restaurants and food/drink artisans, including Odd Duck, Texas French Bread, Hoover's Cooking, Confituras, Paula's Texas Spirits, Hops and Grain, Saint Arnold Brewing Company and Buddha's Brew Kombucha.
A silent auction will feature an assortment of gardening goodies from local nurseries, as well as movie tickets, restaurant gift cards, and more. All proceeds benefit Green Corn Project and will help us plant organic vegetable gardens for individuals, elementary schools and community groups that need better access to fresh foods.
Early Bird tickets are now available through September 30 for $35. After September, advance tickets are $40. Day of event tickets at the gate are $45. Bring the family! Kids 12 and under are free!
