Workday Saturday 11/9 8:30-10:30
The November organized workday will be this Saturday 11/9 from 8:30-10:30. Organized workdays are a great way for Sunshine gardeners to complete service hours and meet fellow Sunshine gardeners. Projects and tasks needing to be done will be identified including tasks qualifying for TSBVI service hours. The workday will be led by Bill Cason.
SCG Education
The SCG Education Team has been re-formed after a near two-year gap. The new ET members are:
- Ila Falvey (ila.falvey@gmail.com) - generalist
- Charlotte Jernigan (charlotte@cybermesa.com) - generalist
- Marsha Riti (marshariti@gmail.com) - children & family activities
We are looking for three additional roles. This can be the same person or three (or more) different people. Please join us!!!
- Someone to focus on new gardener orientation & education.
- Someone to act as our Basic Videographer (amateur but solid skills are fine: basic filming, mostly in exterior/daylight, and basic editing and titling skills)
- Professional Videographer willing to work at typical non-profit level of budget. Each/all videos will be bid, contracted and paid as separate projects.

Safety Needs to be a Priority at the Garden
Bob Easter writes:
"For some time I have been extremely worried about the dangers in the garden. If one walks around the garden there are all kinds of ways to trip and fall due to lumber, rocks, or simply tripping when turning or moving to fast.
Here are three photos that show a short iron rod sticking out of the ground and another one with an iron pipe sticking up inside a larger iron pipe. If any gardener trips and falls on one of these iron stakes, it could impale the body. I find these to be extremely dangerous and they are all over our gardens.
Another solution would be to put a tall PVC pipe over it. But this tennis ball also will help defect a fall plus it catches the eye of the gardener."
Spring Plant Sale 2020
Susan Prosperie writes:
"Think about plants you might want to contribute to the 'passalong' table for our Spring Sale (Yes thinking about it already). Unfortunately, I have no way to protect plant donations through the freezing months ahead so I'm asking that folks hold on to their donations until a week or so before the sale.
Questions? Email me (dzane@austin.rr.com) and thank you so much."
Note: As we learned at the Gardeners' Meeting on 11/2, one gallon plastic pots and larger ones you have available should be donated to the greenhouse for those persons who want to participate in the Passalongs and need some additional pots for dividing their plants.
Zilker Botanical Gardens Events
November 9, 2019 - "Herbs 102: Cool Herbs for Fall"
TWiG: Talks & Walks in the Garden - 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 p.m.
The Austin Herb Society invites all herb gardening novices and Austin newcomers to attend "Herbs 102: Cool Herbs for Fall" at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 in The Herb Garden on site! This lecture will focus on selecting and growing herbs that thrive in colder temperatures: dill, cilantro, oregano, parsley, sage and thyme, to name just a few. Participants will learn how to successfully transplant and fertilize their herb plants as well as how to enjoy cool-weather culinary favorites in their cooking. AHS education and outreach director and master gardener Lucinda Rudin will lead the talk, which also includes an opportunity to tour the Zilker Herb Garden and learn about the many varieties of herbs grown there.
This free class is part of the Austin Herb Society's new educational series, TWiG: Talks & Walks in the Garden, which offers free interactive workshops on gardening with an emphasis on herbs.
Cost: Free with regular garden admission.
