Micah 6 Loves Your Donations
Article by Dana Kuykendall:
Every Saturday morning, a volunteer from Sunshine Gardens delivers fresh, healthy garden produce to the Micah 6 Food Pantry. This year, we have donated more than 3857 pounds of fresh produce and more than 382 pounds of dry produce. Each month, Walter Kuhl submits the total weight of donations in the Weekly Weeder.
The fresh produce comes from the Micah 6 plot and individual donations from gardeners' own plots. The generous response to an increased need since the pandemic began has been truly amazing. The clients served by the Micah food pantry love our fresh produce, so please remember them if you have extra vegetables. The pantry is always in need of dry goods too. Please think about Micah 6 if you have non-expired canned goods such as tuna, stew, soups, beans, and vegetables. They also appreciate donations of peanut butter, healthy cereals, trail mix, packaged milk or juice that does not require refrigeration. No glass containers, please. If you have fresh produce or dry goods, please leave them in the cool room or refrigerator in the trailer. Our dedicated volunteers are more than happy to add them to our delivery each Saturday.
Thank you all for your generosity and let's close out 2021 as the top year ever for SCG donations!
2021 Service Hours Reminder
Article by Jim Willmann
Remember that the 2021 Spring and Fall service hour seasons have been combined and gardeners must work all the combined hours by December 31st. This means a full plot gardener will need to work 2 TSBVI hours and 16 regular hours between 1/1/2021 and 12/31/2021; half and quarter plot gardeners 2 TSBVI hours and 8 regular hours. Any unworked hours as of 12/31 will be billed in January and must be paid before a gardener can renew membership for Spring 2022. All hours worked and recorded in the spring will be automatically included in calculating the total hours worked in 2021. Gardeners are encouraged to check the Green Binder on SCG website (Sunshine Community Gardens) to verify their recorded hours. Gardeners still needing to work hours should check the list of needed tasks in this edition of the Weeder.
If a gardener does not work any hours, the bill for the entire year can be substantial. For example, if a full plot gardener works no hours, the bill would be $300 ($100 for 2 TSBVI hours + $60 for first 2 regular hours + $140 for 14 remaining regular hours); for a half or quarter plot gardener working no hours, the bill would be $220 ($100 for TSBVI hours + $60 for first 2 regular hours + $60 for remaining regular hours.)
Gardeners who believe they may qualify for a waiver for all or part of their 2021 service hours, e.g., because of a health condition should contact their zone coordinator to discuss.
Garden Tasks
Thursday, 18 November, 2021
Priority (Tasks specifically needed):
- Work day Saturday 11/20/2021 09:00 - 12:00
- We have had success on the last 4 workdays addressing the khaki weed.
Kudos to all that participated. You have really made a difference and feel
free to attack it some more. This Saturday however, we will be working
on the Hoop house and Green house, general cleaning and repair.
On Saturday AM Please find Janet Adams or Randy Thompsonto see what is going on.

- Maintaining common paths and common areas. If you have plants extending into common paths, trim them. The common paths are designed to allow the biggest wheelbarrows that we own to traverse them unimpeded.
- Mowing and maintaining perimeter fence line inside and out.
- Sunshine Community Garden was fined a few weeks ago for the dumpster being
over filled. Please help us to avoid this by following a few simple
guidelines.
- Fill the dumpster from the back (under the hinges) to the front. If you put stuff in the front, it tends to stay there.
- If you think the dumpster is full, contact me (Steve Camp, I'm there a lot) or Randy Thompson. We can usually compact stuff to make more space.
- Follow the rules regarding what goes into the dumpster and what does not, there's signage close by.
- If the dumpster actually does get full before pick up day, I'm working on finding a spot where we can store a reasonable overage, to be loaded after the dumpster is emptied.
- If you're done with your project, please close the lids.
TSVBI:
- Weeding paths in TSBVI garden and wood chip areas on west side. (This is normally needed. Try to get out roots. Be sure to smooth out paths after weeding to facilitate TSBVI students moving around garden).
- Mowing between fence and street along 49th St. and Sunshine Dr. along and 10' inside fence. (Frequent mowing will be needed this time of year.)
- Picking up trash in compost area and along fence lines.
Regular:
- Mowing (Please check area around trailer and greenhouses.
- Maintaining common paths. (Gardeners are required to maintain a 2' strip of common paths adjacent to their plot.)
- Mowing and cleaning up overgrown/messy places in common areas.
- Cleaning street curb gutters of dirt and debris build up. (At places in the curb gutter along Sunshine Dr. and 49th St., soil and debris has built up and grass beginning to grow. Scrape off with shovel and put in wheelbarrow. If debris is gravel can be put in low places in parking lot. Otherwise, put in dumpster.)
Note: TSBVI hour tasks can also count as regular hours.
Slow Down..You're on Garden Time! Enjoy!

Eggplant Borek Recipe
Recipe submitted by Ila Falvey
Ila says: "If your eggplant and peppers are still producing, here is a wonderful recipe for you to try. If you canned your surplus tomatoes you can use a quart for this recipe. You don't have to peel the eggplant. Phoenicia Bakery (around the corner) has filo dough."
Women and Fair Trade Festival
Gardener and wonderful photographer, Susan Van Haitsma, shares info about an event taking place on Sat. 11/20/21 in our neighborhood.
Susan says, "The Women and Fair Trade event will be held right next door to SCG at the Unitarian Church one day only on Saturday, so I thought gardeners might be interested. There will be lots of beautiful crafts there."
