Hose Problems at Sunshine

Wil Ilcisin writes:

"Fellow Gardeners, please do not epoxy hoses or nozzles to the the faucets in the garden. It makes it impossible to remove the hose once it needs to be replaced and requires the faucets to be replaced which is an added expense. Thanks!"

Holly Gilman adds:

Another explanation for "frozen hoses or nozzles" is the problem of steel vs. bronze connections. Once steel and bronze are connected to one another for a period of time, their connection causes a chemical reaction binding them permanently together. Please pay attention to whether the faucet you are connecting your hose or your nozzle to and only connect steel to steel or bronze to bronze. If you are connecting bronze to steel, be sure to disconnect it after each use to prevent the metals"freezing" together.

Apples are plentiful in the fall

Below is my Mom's recipe for an apple cake which is a healthier alternative to the more traditional Apple Pie.

Whole Wheat Apple Cake - By Laura Gilman

4 c.	grated apples
1 & 1/2 c.	dark brown sugar
1 c.	chopped walnuts
2 lg.	eggs, slightly beaten
2 t.	vanilla
1/2 c.	canola oil
2 t.	cinnamon
1 t.	baking soda
1 t.	salt
2 c.	whole wheat flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix grated apple, sugar and nuts. Combine eggs, vanilla and oil, add to apple mixture and mix well.

Mix together cinnamon, baking soda, whole wheat flour and salt. Add to apple mixture and combine thoroughly.

Pour into greased & floured 13" x 9" pan and bake for 1 hour.
