Join Us for a ZOOM Holiday Spectacular!
SCG President Steve Uecker invites all members to join the Zoom on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2020 at 6:00 PM:
Exciting news! Or news that can be as exciting as a virtual event can be! Join us for our Holiday Party All Garden Meeting. This will be held Tuesday at 6:00 pm on ZOOM. A link will be sent to all members via email.
Despite COVID, the board has been able to do some good things this year and we want to tell you all about them! We also want to vote on a nominations committee. The nominations committee sole task is to get folks to run for office. We want you to help us make the garden better. One way is to serve on the nominations committee.
Spring 2021 Plant Sale News
Because of the pandemic, We will not be having our large open-to-the-public plant sale this coming year. The good news is we have a solution. To minimize the effect on gardeners, we have arranged for Former Sunshine president and pepper guru Jeff Monks along with herbal genius Jen Woertz to grow plants (tomatoes, peppers, herbs and other plants, for individual Sunshine gardeners which they will deliver to Sunshine. They are looking at our plant sale survey for ideas as to varieties to grow. The price will be the usual $2.00. More details will be forthcoming as spring approaches including a list of varieties available .. So, dream thoughts of tomato plums dancing in your head and provide Jeff and Jen at jeff@jeffmonks.com with any suggestions you may have.
Organic Cow Manure Delivery Today
Randy Thompson reports:
An order of organic cow compost is arriving sometime on Thursday, 12/3. It will be $2 a bucket and $7 for five buckets. Please do not pay with coins. Remember that the compost is for members only and to be used at Sunshine only. Limit yourself to 20 buckets per full size plot. If you have a smaller plot your limit is smaller. Please measure your compost by levelling the top with the rim of the buckets.
Saffron Crocus
Crocus sativus (saffron crocus) from the Sunshine garden of Shailesh and Krishna Tripathi. The red thready stigma can be dried to become the world's costliest spice, saffron.

Special Thank-you to Scott George and Austin Beautiful Ttrees
You may have noticed the recent tree trimming at Sunshine Community Gardens. The most noticeable was the pruning of the mulberry by the front gate and the removing dead limbs from both the desert willow by the driveway and the redbud by 49th/Sunshine Dr. intersection. Less noticeable was raising the canopy of the hackberries over the trailer roof and pruning the hackberries by the chicken coop to reduce shading on nearby garden plots. This work was done by Austin Beautiful Trees whose founder, Scott George, has generously donated all the work except for the brush removal and hauling, which is a fixed cost. This donated work amounts to a 75% saving for Sunshine. A special thanks to Scott and Austin Beautiful Trees for their support of Sunshine Community Gardens. Scott is a Certified Arborist and Austin Beautiful Trees was incorporated in 2005.
