Service Hours
Service hours need to be completed by December 31st. They must be recorded by January 4th 2015. Any hours that are recorded after this cutoff date will not be credited. All gardeners can now check their hours by simply logging into the virtual green binder on the website.
Reminder
I briefly reviewed service hours reported and determined that most of Sunshine's gardeners have not fulfilled or perhaps not recorded service hours. Only a handful of gardeners appear to have satisfied the service hours requirement to date.
Use our Website http://www.sunshinecommunitygardens.org/ and go to the far right tab and select virtual green binder to both record and check hours recorded. You must use the name that is on your contract to check hours.
Contact Sharon at scgardenweb@gmail.com for technical issues or wrong entries and Ginny gheilman1@gmail.com for hour issues.
To check what jobs can be counted towards work hours check the website. Each plot is responsible for eight work hours per season, plus one hour TSVBI service. There are two seasons per year.
Payment
Plot rental and hours owed fees will be due by February 1st.
PayPal will be available again this year for payment. Please check the website for updates.
December Gardening
At this time of year, things are quiet in the garden. The winter vegetables are all in the ground, all they need is the occasional watering and fertilizing with an organic fertilizer. As the plants grow, so unfortunately do the weeds. Either hoeing them or hand pulling them will reduce the number going to seed and should reduce the number of weeds for the coming year, so it's worth the effort.
This is also a good time of year to plan your spring garden. Make a diagram of your garden and try to plan upcoming crops so that you have a rotation of vegetables. Planting the same plant in the same spot can make them more susceptible to diseases that have established themselves in the soil. Crop rotation is a major technique in organic gardening. Anything the gardener can do to reduce the need to treat plants for diseases the healthier the garden will be, and crop rotation is one way to help.
Things to plant in December
