VERNON BARKER GARDEN PROJECT - A GARDEN PLOT FOR THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED
There will be a Workday this Saturday, October 27 from 9 am to 12 noon, to continue work on this plot under construction between the plots just east of the tool shed and the parking area. The plot is being constructed to be accessible to physically challenged gardeners, in honor of Vernon Barker (a long-time Sunshine gardener who passed away last year). It will feature 24” high raised beds to allow people in wheel chairs, with back, or other elasticity problems the opportunity to do a little gardening.
Tasks will include:
- Moving in the rest of the crushed granite to the garden plot
- Assembling the planters on the plot
- Laying down a liner and PCV pipe to install a wicking bed
For more information contact Steven Uecker, steven_uecker@hotmail.com.
What is a Wicking Bed?
A wicking bed is a raised bed that is designed to hold some water in a gravel substrate below the soil layer. The water gets to the layer via a L shaped perforated PVC tube that has a cap at the surface where the bed is watered. A membrane about 6" high keeps water present but allows drainage in a downpour. The soil then wicks that water up from the bottom, feeding the roots from below like a mini aquifer. This keeps the soil cool and moist which is a great way to make these back relieving beds productive in our climate. It reduces water waste by not losing it to evaporation and run off, and it promotes root growth down into the soil and not the surface making a happier stronger plant.
