What to do in the garden in March
This is prime gardening time. The average date for the last frost in Austin is Feb 19th, so the freeze that is coming up the next two nights is considered a late freeze. That doesn't mean we won't have another freeze before the end of the month. Once you've bought your summer plants, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, it is probably wise to either transplant into bigger pots and keep at home for a few weeks until the soil warms up, or if you do transplant them into the garden be prepared to water, cover, and if possible provide a little heat for them on cold nights. Many gardeners wrap tomato cages with plastic. This will not prevent freezing but will help protect young transplants and reduce the cold wind reaching the plants. At this time of year our weather tends to swing wildly between hot and cold, windy and still and every other type of contrast you can think of. This is the time for the gardener to be vigilant and take appropriate measures to protect the small plants.
To plant
early to mid month - Lettuce, Mustard, Radish, Beets, collards, turnips.
