TCMGA Gardening Seminar: March 30, 2019
"Overcoming the Challenges of Growing Tomatoes"
Master Gardener Vegetable Specialist Patty Leander will kick-off this year's seminar series on March 30, 2019, with a presentation on tomatoes. She will share her knowledge of how to overcome some common challenges that adversely affect tomatoes, such as common bugs and diseases. In addition, Patty will share harvesting tips and some of her favorite recipes for enjoying your tomato bounty. Invite your friends and neighbors.
The seminar is open to the public and no RSVP is needed. You can direct them to the Zilker Botanical Garden, or TCMGA websites for more information. Although the seminar is free, Zilker Botanical Garden requires a park entrance fee. The seminars are held from 10 a.m. to noon in the Zilker Garden Center.
Volunteer Needed for Compost Screen Repair
If you want to get some of your volunteer hours in this spring, contact Randy Thompson about doing screen repair on compost sifters. Randy Thompson - jartdaht@gmail.com
Gardener Rules for Using SCG's Compost
- Absolutely NO khaki weed to be placed in compost.
- Read the signs at the various compost piles and follow their directions.
- Understand that different materials decompose at different rates. We
do not take the following items
which take too long to decompose for our compost operation:
- wood
- tree saplings
- branches
- bamboo
- Please add only what will decompose in our operation. That means: no plastic, no rocks, no row cover/weed control fabric, and no inorganic materials of any kind. Place these items in the dumpster.
- Cut your plants into smaller pieces using loppers or the root slayer. Whole plants take much longer to break down than pieces.
- Return all tools/wheelbarrows/screens to the tool shed, but leave the trash buckets in the compost area.
- When harvesting compost, put the material left in the screens in the buckets. Empty the buckets into the dumpster and return the buckets to the compost area when finished.
- Put your rocks or any rocks you have retrieved from the compost pile into the ruts in the driveways throughout the garden or in the trash buckets which you dump into dumpster. Never put rocks in any grassy areas in the garden. Mowers do not like rocks.
- Do not create debris piles around the harvest pile.
- Please remember that compost is a common resource and share accordingly.
Thank you.
Please Recycle at Home VS Dumpster at Sunshine
There are plenty of items ending up in the Sunshine dumpster which recycle and should be taken home with you to be recycled. According to Randy, way too many plastic pots and other easy to identify recyclable things are ending up in the dumpster.
