Donation to All Blind Children of Texas
At the Sunshine Community Garden Members Meeting on Saturday, May 18th, Janet Adams of Sunshine delivered to Gloria Bennett and a fellow board member of All Blind Children of Texas, a donation to the program from the proceeds of the 2019 SCG Spring Plant Sale. The photo above reflects this year's donation amount, but a blow up of last year's check to the organization.
Mural to be Painted on TSBVI Shipping Container
Remember that TSBVI shipping container many of us painted on last summer? Below is a photograph of the drawing for the upcoming mural to be painted on the container. Harrison Gay, lifelong friend of Marie Taylor in Zone 6, has graciously offered his services to paint a colorful mural onto the beige storage container in the southwest corner of the Gardens near the chicken coop area. He is an elementary teacher who has done other murals and projects around town. The board voted to pay for materials, and his labor is free. TSBVI has signed off on the project.
Harrison will commence work on the mural (weather permitting) on June 8 & 9. If you happen to see what appears to be a highly skilled tagger/graffiti artist, you will know the story behind the sight. Please come over to thank him for his kind offer.
Historical Edifice Uncovered at Sunshine
A large limestone retaining wall forms a large plateau of sorts on the Sunshine site. This terraced area is located south of the office trailer between the fence and the road to the compost piles. Have you ever wondered how this elevation came to be? It was not a alluvial deposit from a glacier but more recent. In the mid 1980's Tim Miller worked at Sunshine and other gardens that were under the auspices of Austin Community Gardens. Tim asked the developers of homes in a subdivision along Bull Creek to bring the topsoil that they scraped to Sunshine. Tim also managed to get limestone blocks delivered, and he constructed a retaining wall to support the transplanted topsoil. Tim christened this elevated plateau as the "Market Garden" and managed this area as a food pantry garden for several years. After Tim left, it was fallow for a number of years. It became a trial iris bed and is currently the location of the greenhouse, a section of several plots and the office flower beds.
Tim returned to the scene of construction last week power trimmer in hand and
cleared off the wall. It has withstood the test of time as you can see. Tim has
spent the last 30+ years working his certified organic farm - Millberg Farm. To
