Tomato Tasting Event - June 9th
Tomato tasting Saturday, June 9 at 9 am. Please bring some tomatoes to share with your fellow gardeners so we can all gain knowledge of those varieties we did not grow. We will have bags in the trailer in the days leading up the tasting. Mark the variety so we can prepare the scoring sheets in advance.
We need a few volunteers to help with Tomato Tasting setup. If you wish to volunteer, please let Randy (jartdaht@gmail.com) or Kay (scg.plots@gmail.com) know.
Sunshine Potato "Show & Tell"
Sat. June 9th, 9:00 A.M. in conjunction with Tomato Tasting
Potato Growers - Share your growing experience and Show your potato crop! Wanna be growers - Come learn from others, learn the what and how! As a companion event to our Tomato Tasting, we are offering everyone the opportunity to share information about potato growing at Sunshine or from your other gardens (home, community, etc).
Current Potato Growers:
- Fill out the simple form (blank forms on the main room table in the trailer, fill in the information and be on hand to share your potato experience with other interested gardeners).
- Leave a few potatoes of each type with the form as part of the show and tell, including one to cut on Saturday, to show the texture, flesh color, etc.
- Coordinators will arrange a table of samples with the information for all to learn from on Sat AM, June 9.
- Please leave your samples in the trailer by 4:00 on Friday, June 8 (you can bring them Sat AM before 9 if you cannot make the Friday deadline).
Wanna Be Growers: Come to Sunshine Gardens for the combined Tomato Tasting and Potato Show and Tell - see what your fellow gardeners have produced, learn their methods and see samples of their potato crops.

Got Fire Ants? Here's the Scoop to Rid Your Plot of Those Pesky Devils
You will find a pre-mixed blend of orange oil and molasses in the white molasses botttles in the tool trailer, on the table. The garden provides this to everyone to use on the fire ants in their gardens and on common areas. A few points of information and instructions:
- Shake Shake Shake the bottle well (or the orange oil sits on the top of the molasses and you don't get a good pour)
- Pour one measured cup of the pre-mix into a 5 gallon bucket, and fill with water.
- Drench the mound with the diluted solution (one bucket should cover a couple of mounds, maybe 3).
- Rinse the cup and leave it on the table,,,, we have to replace the cup constantly as it goes away,,,,,
- If you took the bucket from under the table,, rinse it and put it back. Put empty bottles under the table for later reuse.
- The pre-mix costs the garden $2.00 a cup, at no charge to the gardeners, so use it sparingly!
- The molasses makes for a rich environment which the ants do not like, but your garden does. The orange oil impacts the hard shell on the fire ants but does not harm your garden. You can look online for more technical information regarding this.
- While the garden tries to keep a good supply on hand, sometimes the supplier is short on orange oil or we have a heavy use weekend and we run out. If we are out, you can try mixing dish soap with hot water and drenching the mound until we have more of the usual mix.
