A new organization, the Central Texas Seed Library invites you to our first public event, at the downtown public library, October 20, 1pm to 3:30pm. We will host a seed exchange open to everyone, whether or not you have your own seeds to exchange. We will also have a free seed saving class from 1pm to 1:30pm. Come and learn about how you can save seeds and exchange them with our growing network of gardeners and farmers. This event is free and everyone is welcome!
Fall Garden Resources
Today Austin Resource Recovery delivered a stack of heavy cardboard -- for Zone 6 but we would like to open this to everyone at SCG. The cardboard stack is on the edge of the parking lot, covered with a tarp. Please keep covered. Thanks!
- Recycled/ Repurposed cardboard breaks down naturally and is more environmentally friendly (in that way) than plastic.
- Cardboard is a great weed barrier - better than weed cloth.
- Thick cardboard makes a great covering for cleared parts of your garden until you can get it planted. Keep sheets in place with rocks or bricks.
- Use it as an under-layment for the wood chips or mulch in your inner-garden isles.
- Great under the major walkways within Your Zone.
A Note From Austin Resource Recovery
Greetings
My name is Scott Johnson. I work for Austin Resource Recovery at the city Recycling and ReUse Drop-Off Center. I have been tasked with organizing a program that collects and distributes lawn and gardening materials to local citizens.
I am sending out this email to let everyone know that I have been working very hard on the Gardening ReUse program. This program collects lawn and garden supplies and makes them available to community / home gardeners, schools, churches, and basically anyone who is involved in gardening in their community.
Please send out this email and/or my contact information to anyone that you might know that could benefit from this program. I am trying and get as many people involved in the program as I can.
Here is a list of some of the items that I am setting aside for people who want to take advantage of the program. It is by no means complete. Please note that not all materials will be available on all days. I am dependent on what comes into my facility.
Blood Meal | Bone Meal | Castile Soap |
Compost starter | Deer/Rabbit Repellant | Diatomaceous Earth |
Fish Fertilizer | Hasta Grow | Horticultural Molasses |
Insecticidal Soap | Ironite | Ladybug Fertilizer |

Additionally, the city has Wood Mulch available every day that we are open. It is completely self-serve, so make sure to bring a truck, bags, containers, pitchforks, shovels, etc.
Contact me to make an appointment to come shop at 512-974-4308 and at scott.johnson2@austintexas.gov
