Thank You Volunteers
Thanks to the efforts of many Sunshine volunteers, our fall plant sale raised almost $2300 for the horticultural program at TSBVI. Additionally, we donated over 250 leftover plants to local elementary schools and the Micah 6 garden at Sunshine. Thanks to everyone who helped make the sale a success, as well as everyone who supported us by buying plants!
Volunteer Opportunity
Get your service hours in now
The workday that was rained out last weekend is rescheduled for Sunday, 1st of November from 12:00 - 4:00. The forecasted rain should be over by then.
Projects include restoring the granite paths around the raised beds, maintenance on the TSBVI garden, clearing vacant plots, and converting a full plot to quarter plots.
The projects will count towards TSBVI and regular service hours.
Wanted
Cardboard or newspapers to put down for the Raised Beds paths at the Sunday workday. You can bring them on Sunday or earlier and leave in the hoop greenhouse.
Thanksgiving Food Drive
How many Thanksgiving dinners can three hundred gardeners provide? Let's find out!
Please give generously to feed those in need.
Suggestions from our friends at the Micah Food Pantry include canned hams, or meat, traditional holiday foods, and packaged mixes for cakes, cookies, rolls and other baked goods. Any and all non-perishable food will be welcomed.
Boxes will be available in the main room of the trailer and will be replaced when full.
UT Health graduate student seeks community gardeners for interviews
A public health graduate student is exploring the potential health benefits of community gardens and seeking individuals to interview about their experiences. The interviews will be conducted as part of a qualitative research course at the University of Texas, School of Public Health.
Ideally, participants will be male ages 65+. The content from these interviews will not be made public and all personal information will be protected. Please contact Kristen Munson at 408-612-7351 or Kristen.munson@uth.tmc.edu if you are interested in participating. Thank you for sharing your experiences in the garden.
Notice to all Gardeners
Do not take stuff that doesn't belong to you. One of our new gardeners put some transplants in the greenhouse to avoid the storm and now they're gone. Also, a bag of compost is missing. In general, if it's not in front of the toolshed on the left side or it doesn't have a sign saying "Free, take me", gardeners should not take items from elsewhere in the garden.
The greenhouses can be used by gardeners until they are needed for the Spring Plant Sale. However anything that is left in there should be clearly labeled with the owner's name and phone number.
Compost Tea available in the greenhouse Sunday 1st November unless it is still raining.
Austin Community Gardens Discussion Group
We've created a new discussion Google Group for the Coalition of Austin Community Gardens. This group serves as a forum for community gardeners to share information about educational opportunities, events, and funding opportunities relevant to community gardens, as well as a place to share community garden-related ideas. CACG meeting announcements will also be posted to this group
To join the Discussion Group of the Coalition of Austin Community Gardens, visit the group's page and request to join: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/discussion-group-coalition-of-austin-community-gardens
